Weather hasn't really encouraged me to spend much time in my studio past couple of weeks. Grey, cold and damp weather seems to have robbed me of most of my inspiration. However, I did complete this portrait of Michael, a fellow artist. I'm always meaning to do more portraits of friends of mine.... But never seem to quite manage it! If there's anyone out there who can offer me a few days in the warm sun, please let me know. Can always paint a portrait for you in return for some hospitality?

Start of a New Year!

So, the holiday period is behind us and we can all get back to our daily routine! Though I was still busy, not necessarily producing work, but working on the internet, trying to get a stronger presence. This takes loads of time and effort! Went to my studio on 1st January, but it was so cold (given I hadn't been there for over a week and it had become like a fridge) that whilst there I promptly contracted a cold! Came home. Ok, so we are now into the New Year, and my teaching will commence again in a few days. Our life drawing class will start in a few weeks, so am displaying here two photos that I hope will give a flavour as to how the class operates. My faulty Baumatic cooker hood!

I've got a good moan to make. No, not about art, but something totally different. Summer of 2007 we had a new kitchen installed - Yes, you can imagine the chaos. Several weeks of no lighting, cooking via microwave - No sink, a bucket. No doubt you've been through similar. I won't mention the rest of the house, total refurbishment etc.. etc..
However, we had a new cooker hood installed, provided by a company called Baumatic. No sooner was it out of guarantee than if packed up! It emitted a terrible sound. Picked up the phone to the service department, but really they didn't want to know. However, they said they would send out an engineer to replace any faulty part, but charge a staggering £88! Could buy the complete thing for a bit more. Anyway, send the engineer. He duly came, spent 20 minutes replacing a faulty plastic fan, collected the £88 and off he went. I felt disappointed by the service, given that it was just out of guarantee and I was a new customer. I wrote to the company about my disappointment, but they weren't sympathetic. Wrote to the head of the company personally. He didn't even reply! So beware, before buying any Baumatic product, just recall my experience. I, for one, will never purchase anything from them again.

Maghull's Celebration of Art, this weekend!

We are now into the final days till December Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th, when we Celebrate a big exhibition of paintings at two venues. Maghull Town Hall and Deyes Lane High School. What's prompted this effort is Liverpool's Capital of Culture year. Around 150 local artists will be taking part, from across our local area of Sefton. Anyone thinking of taking up art as a leisure pursuit should come along; see the kind of work being produced - and it covers a wide range. Talk to the artists and find out if it's for you.

Opening times on both days are from 10.30am till 5.00pm. Oh, and refreshments will be available - with mince pies!

I'd long wanted to do a painting on the iconic Marilyn Monroe, and, as you can see, I've finally done it. I think she was someone who epitomised many peoples' idea of sexuality in the years before her tragic death. Even more sad when one considers that she apparently had everything in life that money could buy, she lacked happiness within herself. Artists visit to John Moores exhibition

Yes... I took a large group of artists to a guided tour of the John Moore's 25th Biennial painting exhibition at Liverpool's Walker art gallery last Friday, 14th November. As with any visit to an exhibition there was certainly some trenchant views expressed that went from the extreme of "...it's fascinating to get an insight into an artist's mind..." To "...my five-year-old could do better." Isn't that what art is supposed to do? Spark off debate and get people engaged in talking about Art?
The problem with much one finds in the John Moore's - indeed in all similar exhibitions that purports to show cutting edge art - is that when one walks through the gallery, many of the paintings leave us unmoved. The reasons for this is that often the content is difficult, or impossible, to understand without something or someone telling is what the painting is about and the ideas behind it. Often the ideas behind the painting is more interesting than the visual impact the piece offers. So it was with the half-dozen paintings that the guide, Paul O'keef, showed us. Without his in depth explanation much of what is on the walls would have left us disengaged and bemused. I later looked up the winner and prize winners on the internet and found virtually all of them were from London! So, too, were probably the judges! Aren't Jake and Dinos Chapman based there? And a quick look at several more of the judges (5 in total) gives it all a very London bias. Of over 3.000 submissions (at £15 a submission - or that's what it was two years ago when I submitted) only about forty made it to the final show. How several of the paintings made it that far left me confused, when I consider the finished product, and a feeling that it was "knocked out" in a matter of minutes! Okay, it may have taken the artist a whole year of preliminary thought processes to reach that point of final burst of energy and creative output. But I'd put money on that many better submissions were rejected.

Have had to slow-up from my painting in past couple of weeks - Reason, I'm having to devote time to organising our December art exhibition in Maghull, near Liverpool UK. I run several art groups and this time we've linked up with another local group to put together what will be the biggest art event of the year, outside of Liverpool (currently Capital of Culture). Obviously this takes both time and commitment. So, fingers crossed, that it will go okay. Whenever possible I'm turning to my next couple of paintings and toying with ideas! This can often be time consuming as I go through various ideas before finding one that interests me. In the meantime, here is a painting done recently. First painting from a new model....

Yes, this is the first painting from a new model. This figure promises a series of interesting paintings.... In that the model is quite sumptious, full of interesting shapes. To be honest, with this one I'm playing safe and not attempting to experiment, as in the previous painting. I still find it difficult to break out of my way of working, but come back to my natural and instinctive way of working. Yet I often feel I want to break away from it. Once I've done several more working from this model, then I will feel confident to take it to a new challenging direction! So watch this space. A recent nude study, completed in the last few days. I was experimenting a little, wanting to move away from depicting the model in a too literal way. Wanted to use colour and heighten it. Capturing the features of the model wasn't what interested me on this occasion. In my next paintings I want to explore the use of texture of the paint, thick and thin. Sounds easy! In fact working outside of a well established norm does take a leap of both faith and courage! As I often tell my students, painting isn't at all easy. It's a constant battle. Since starting my fine art degree back in 2001 I have always worked from the model, both male and female nudes. I have now decided to devote my new site exclusively to this subject, also figurative work.
